Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS is a disorder of the large intestines. Irritable bowel syndrome has no cure. People who are affected by this disorder sometimes have crippling pain.

There are medications that help, but sometimes the medications are ineffective. New research has shown that Manuka Honey can help with the symptoms of IBS or Irritable bowel syndrome.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

If you are reading this article, you probably have irritable bowel syndrome, or you know someone who has irritable bowel syndrome.

It is estimated that 1 in 7 adults have IBS. Often times, the symptoms are unbearable. Fortunately, in the past 10 years, there have been great strides made in the treatment of IBS. However, we still do not have a cure.

Often times when patients are diagnosed with IBS, they are left confused because the doctor cannot tell them how they contracted the disorder. In fact, the diagnosis of IBD usually comes after months or years of having abdominal pain.

It has always been speculated that the root cause of IBS is bacterial overgrowth.

Manuka honey has been around for centuries. Everyone has heard about the benefits of honey at one time or another. However, Manuka honey from New Zealand has special properties because of the Manuka trees. These bees pollinate the Manuka tree. These trees grow exclusively in Eastern New Zealand.

Manuka Honey and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

I have had digestive issues since I was in my 20s. I took acid reduction meds for years and years, which did not help me at all.  I day I ate some buffalo wings and I had the worst pain radiating up to my left shoulder.  I thought I was having a heart attack.

I went to the emergency room, and it was found that I had gallbladder disease. I had a HIDA scan and my gall bladder was found to be working at 1%. I was immediately scheduled for gallbladder removal. I had an uneventful surgery.

I had a lot of pain after surgery. I was told there would be minimum pain. I was discharged and I still had pain.

Symptoms I Had of IBS

I truly believe my problem was never gallbladder disease. I believe it was always IBS, not diagnosed. My gall bladder was removed in December 2015. My digestive health had down spiraled since. I had tried every medication and remedy under the sun to help. The bloating, pain, indigestion, and just feeling miserable was very difficult.

I am a nurse and I work 12-hour shifts. So as you can see this was very hard on me.

I am a natural born researcher, so I went on a search to try and find something to help me. I started reading about Manuka honey and IBS. Now honey is forbidden on the FODMAP diet plan because of the high sugar content. However, there are just too many positive reviews for Manuka honey to ignore this.

I want to be clear, Manuka honey is not a cure for IBS, but it does help improve the debilitating symptoms.

Manuka Honey Exerts Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Effects in Gastric Ulcers

The objective of a study was to see the effects of Manuka honey in the treatment of gastric ulcers. Three different groups of rats were treated with three different concentrations of Manuka honey. These rats had acetic acid-induced gastric ulcers.

Many people with irritable bowel syndrome have gastric ulcer symptoms. Treatment with Manuka honey significantly decreased the ulcerated area. It also reduced inflammation.

I bought this particular brand of Manuka honey because of the awesome reviews that were on Amazon. The first day I put a half teaspoon in my green tea. Within 30 minutes, my stomach was gurgling and making all sorts of noises. I do not have a gallbladder, so my digestion is totally messed up. My gall bladder was removed 4.5 years ago and every day since then, I have gall stomach bloating.

I was also diagnosed with H. Pylori bacteria to complicate matters. I took the antibiotic therapy but the symptoms came back so I was back to square one.

As of this writing, I have been on Munaka honey for 4 days. So far, the bloat has gone down tremendously.  I am also begging to tolerate more foods. Now, this remedy is not a license to eat bad things that you know are a trigger for your IBS.
